Definition of Laser Edge Banding

Laser edge banding utilizes the latest laser technology to produce a seamless joint between a panel and the edge tape. The precision and consistency that laser edge banding delivers results in an extremely durable bond that is moisture resistant, free of visible glue lines, and contains no gaps. Applied heat to the back side of the edge band material creates a bond to the substrate. Because there's no glue involved, there's no glue line. Referring to this method as 'hot-melt laser' is a misnomer. There's no actual laser used, but the name is a tribute to hot air achieving an invisible edge, just like a laser edge bander. With world-class visual appeal and aesthetics, Laser Edge banding is used to activate a polymer layer on the edge banding material itself, producing the strongest bond with increased heat and moisture resistance.

Benefits of Laser Edge Banding

Minimizes maintenance

Instead of having to routinely clean and repair the glue edgeband, laser edge banding seals the edge into a seamless and permanent state. This ultimately reduces maintenance efforts and costs.

01

Increased heat and moisture resistance

The durability and strength of the bond create a higher heat and moisture tolerance.

02

Permanent and invisible bond

Unlike glue edge banding that can peel off or show discoloration, laser edge banding is permanent and creates and invisible seam to the edge.

03

Seamless

Precision is key. The laser creates such a close match that the line between the laser edge banding and the substrate is seamless.

04

No dirtying or becoming yellow

Glue has a tendency to discolor over time as it collects dirt and other particles. Because of this, it can harm your health as it harbors bacteria.

What Should Be the Thickness of Laser Edge Banding?

The thickness of laser edge banding can vary depending on the manufacturer and the specific application. In general, the thickness of laser edge banding ranges from 0.3mm to 3mm.

• A thickness of 0.3mm to 0.5mm is considered thin, and is typically used for small edges and low-use surfaces.

• A thickness of 0.6mm to 1mm is considered medium, and is suitable for most regular use surfaces, and it's the most common thickness found in the market.

• A thickness of 1mm to 3mm is considered thick and it's used for high-use surfaces, such as countertops, table tops and other heavy-use surfaces.

When choosing the thickness of your laser edge banding, it's important to consider the intended use of the surface, as well as your budget. Thicker laser edge banding is more durable, but it can also be more expensive.

What Size Laser Edge Banding Should I Use?

It's almost always easier and more practical to build a project with plywood. The drawback to using this type of "sheet good" is that the edges of the plywood must be covered so that panel will look as close as possible to a piece of hardwood lumber. Laser edge banding can be a simple as gluing a wood strip to the edge of the plywood and flushing cutting the top edge to the plywood surface. This method allows the builder to use a wide array of router bits to create a pleasing edge design.

If the project calls for a basic straight edge on the plywood, laser edge banding may be just what the doctor ordered. Laser edge banding is real wood veneer that is pre-sanded and available in a 7/8" width. This is ideal for 3/4" thick sheet goods such as plywood and MDF because it allows a bit of overhang and makes it easy to trim it to a flush edge.

How Do I Maintain My Laser Edge Banding?

To maintain the appearance and longevity of your edge banding, clean them regularly with a mild soapy solution and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners that might damage the surface. Maintaining edge banding is essential to keep your furniture or cabinetry looking polished and protected. Laser edge banding are used to enhance the aesthetic appeal and durability of the edges of wood panels or other composite materials. Here are some tips to effectively maintain your laser edge banding:

01/

Regular cleaning: Start by cleaning the laser edge banding regularly to remove any dust, dirt, or grime that may accumulate over time. You can simply wipe them down with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the edge banding.

02/

Avoid moisture: Excessive moisture can cause the laser edge banding to peel or warp. Be cautious when cleaning around the edges and try to prevent water or liquid from seeping into them. If any spills occur, immediately wipe them clean and dry the area.

03/

Mindful handling: Be careful when handling objects near the edge banding to prevent accidental chipping or damage. Avoid dragging sharp or rough objects across the edges, as this may cause them to chip or break. Additionally, be mindful of the weight applied to the edges to avoid undue stress that can weaken or deform the laser edge banding.

04/

Repair minor damage: If you notice any minor cracks, chips, or peeling on the edge banding, it is essential to address them promptly. You can use a specialized laser edge banding repair kit that includes adhesive, filler, and color matching agents. Follow the instructions provided in the kit carefully to achieve the best results.

05/

Sun protection: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause discoloration or fading of the laser edge banding. To prevent this, consider using curtains, blinds, or uv protective films on windows to filter out harmful uv rays and ensure even protection across the furniture surfaces.

06/

Avoid extreme temperatures: Laser edge banding, just like any other material, can be affected by extreme temperatures. Try to avoid placing furniture with edge banding directly near heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces. Extreme heat or cold can cause the laser edge banding to expand, contract, or even crack.

What Is the Difference Between Hot Air and Laser Edge Banding?

The end quality is the same, whether it's laser, plasma, near infared or hot air. The difference is the manufacturing. The laser works faster and is typically ideal for larger companies or manufacturers. Hot-air technology is equally as effective and less expensive. Almost all new installations of equipment by manufacturers include some edgebanding technology. Our edge banding works with all the machines out there. Each seamless, joint-free or zero-joint edgeband is different. It's all very dependent on what type of material the functional layer is made from.

Using edgeband on your laser or hot-air machine could lead to undesirable results depending on the functional layer materials. Using a pre-glued product or a TPU product may still require board cleaning and can increase labor costs. Long-term performance is also less impressive than with our functional layer. It may look nice right off the line, but it's important for customers to know it's not going to have the same effect as our polypropylene functional layer a few years down the road.

Another benefit of polypropylene is the color selection, which is custom matched to the top layer of edgeband. This shows no seam and provides a clear transition. In contrast, on a pre-glue product the color selection is extremely limited and you can often see a small line of glue because the color is not matched. TPU is less stable of a material and will shrink as it continues to cool, creating a small glue line or gap. It also has a tendency to smear because it's softer; this is usually most apparent when they run several boards.

How to Choose Laser Edge Banding?

Laser edge banding is a crucial component in woodworking projects, providing a seamless finish to the edges of furniture, cabinets, and other woodworking creations. It not only enhances the appearance but also adds durability and protection to the edges, prolonging the life of the piece. However, with various options available in the market, choosing the right laser edge banding for your project can be a daunting task. Here, we delve into the key factors to consider when making this important decision.

Material composition
The material composition of laser edge banding plays a significant role in its appearance, durability, and suitability for different applications.

Thickness and width
The thickness and width of the laser edge banding are crucial considerations that impact both aesthetics and functionality. The thickness should match the thickness of the substrate to ensure a flush finish.

Matching grain and color
Achieving a seamless transition between the laser edge banding and the main surface is essential for a professional finish. When selecting laser edge banding, consider factors such as grain pattern, color consistency, and texture to ensure a perfect match with the substrate.

Application method
Laser edge banding can be applied using various methods, including hot melt, pre-glued, or pressure-sensitive adhesive. The chosen application method should align with the project requirements, taking into account factors such as ease of installation, durability, and adhesive performance.

Budget and project scale
Consider your budget and the scale of your project when selecting laser edge banding. While high-quality materials may come at a premium price, they offer superior durability and aesthetics, making them a worthwhile investment for larger projects or high-end furniture pieces.
